Midwest Radio - Weekly Gardening Advice Show 02/05/2015

The programme focused on fruit trees this week with ideal planting conditions for planting fruit. Paraic advised on selection and soil types for apple trees and in particular looked at the coronet family as a good variety for flavour and ease of management. Paraic also discussed blueberries, damson fruit and strawberries and advsied on soil types for the different fruit. Listeners questions included feed for shrubs and trees, problems with poor performing bare root hedgeing, frost damage on cameilas, tackling gooseberry sawfly, suitable hedging for north wind locations, treatment of cabbage root fly and pruning back wallflowers. Plants featured this week included Alstroemeria and Eau de Cologne Mint.

In the last programme before the summer break Paraic focused on tasks for the weeks ahead. Lawncare, deadheading flowers, roses, jobs in the vegetable garden and weed and pest control were all discussed in detail. Listeners questions included suitable plants to add to a fish pond, pale leaves on a Fastia Japonica, problems with strawberries not fruiting, cuckoos spit on Lady's Mantle and when to prune back and feed Wisteria. The sowing of seeds for Autumn growth, the propogation of plants from slips, deterrants for rabbits and house flies, varieties of calla lillies and how to grow Hibiscus were also featured this week.

With weather conditions ideal for the spread of blight at the moment Paraic gave lots of advice on how to prepare to combat blight in both potatoes and tomatoes, and he also advised on how to treat mildew on roses. Paraic gave a variety of top tips for gardening this week. Now that the fine weather has arrived topics covered included the control of weeds which are very prolific just now and the sowing of Spring flowering plants from seed for next year. Paraic also focused on the planting of Laburnum, Sweet William, Peas & Beans, and he also advised on how to grow chilli plants and how to get the best from flowering and fruit plants.

Paraic kicked off the autumn series of the garden programme with a list of tips and tasks for gardeners during September - advice included lawn care, taking advantage of late flowering plants and planting bulbs and seeds for next spring. Mushrooms. maintenance and care of roses and pruning of hedges featured in listeners questions. Paraic also advised on how to strip and reseed a lawn at this time of year, how to prevent slug and wireworm damage in potatoes and discussed plants such as phacilia which are beneficial for attracting bees.

Paraic issued a potatoe blight warning at the start of this weeks programme and advised the use of systemic treatments to help allieviate blight problems. With good weather forecast now is the time to get a head start in the garden and Paraic discusse a range of options to provide colour now and into the latter summer months - plants featured included geraniums, lupins, peoneys and see breeze. Listeners questions included treatment of carrott and cabbage root fly, the care and treatment of rhubarb now that growing is almost finished, sowing seeds now for spring, growing apple trees and tips on variety selection such as Coxes Orange Pippin, Elstar, Katie and James Greave.

The programme focused on the current slow growing conditions created by the cold weather spell. Paraic discussed how to grow sweet potatoes, aubretia and gave advice on sowing sweet peas, lupins and flowers for shady areas. He also described how the old "hot bed" system worked and gave extensive information on the growing of rhubarb including best soil conidtions and best practice to optmise rhubarb harvest.

The importance of adequate watering and feeding in hot weather was also covered in detail and Paraic suggested ensuring hedges and apple trees got a light trimming at this time of year. Questions featured dahlias, camelias and birds of paradise, growing turnips and the treatment of brownheart, growing rhodedendrons from seed, slips and layering , and blanket weed in ponds.

This week's programme started with a discussion on beekeeping as a hobby and gave listeners tips on how to get started.
